Grace was found by a Good Samaritan out walking his dog. She has multiple open wounds around her body and a lot of swelling. She also has a lot of swelling around her ears due to a poorly done job of cropping her ears. She was given over to Animal control and taken to the vet where she was going to be euthanized due to a growing vet bill. Unfortunately there are a lot of strays at the moment and not a whole lot of public funding. Thankfully we live in an amazing community and multiple donors stepped up to contact the vet and paid off her bill. During this time, Guardians had repeatedly been contacted asking if we could take her in. Unfortunately we can only take in dogs if we have somewhere for them to go. Once again, our amazing community stepped up and a person came forward saying they would foster her. We immediately had her pulled and brought into our care. Her story of emergency medical need did not end there however. We thought her continued journey would be getting her healthy and finding her a home. Suddenly, we learned that there was a puppy involved! Fearing that the puppy was deceased in utero, she was rushed in for emergency surgery. The amazing people at Coyne in Crown Point learned during her examination that the puppy is still alive! Plans for surgery are on hold as the situation is assessed.

Grace is doing well. Puppy(s) also seem to be OK.

Grace is now at her foster home. She has been given a nice soft area to calm down and decompress from the stress of the last few days. Coyne found her to be in good health other than the skin wounds and swelling. We are waiting on the results of the blood tests. She is on antibiotics to take care of any infection that might be in there. The puppy (puppies?) don't seem to be affecting her or to be in distress. Now we let her rest, heal, and prepare.

THANK YOU to everyone involved in this little girl's care--the person that found her, Highland Animal Control, the staff at Highland Animal Hospital, the community members that stepped up to pay for her initial vet visit, the staff at Coyne Animal Hospital, Liz and Sherri for rushing her to Coyne and being there for her, and her foster mom for stepping up for her and giving her a soft place to land.

Rescue is a long road. It takes a village to save a life.
